The essay tries to capture some meanings, drawn from the cultural as well as religious history, of the concept of "hell", as viewed from the criminal justice perspective and taking account of the experience of the Shoah and of the crimes against humanity. "Infernal" experiences are deemed those where people are treated as passive recipient of decisions which are relevant for them. Justice theories based on the distributive paradigma (unicuique suum) are then confronted with most advanced, "inclusive" concepts.
